Face vessels or Ugly Jugs have a lot of history throughout the pottery world. Originally a vessel of spirituality and eventually used simply to scare children away from alcohol, face forms are very expressive and multi-purposed. Looking for a challenge and a new skill? Come learn to throw bottled forms

Cost is $125 including all materials.

Learning Objectives:

  • Modeling
  • Altering forms
  • 2lbs + Throwing
  • Collaring / Bottled Forms
  • Engobes / Colored Slips
  • Facial Sculpting / Proportions / Anatomy

Day 1: Assign shelves and clay. Demonstration throwing larger cylinders and in depth talk on facial proportions. Pinch and alter cylinders to create general face.

Day 2: Refining faces on leather hard pieces. Demonstration on modeling techniques. Optional demonstration on throwing bottled forms

Day 3: Last day to finish wet clay. Demo on colored slips / engobes. Colors will be brushed onto work.  Open studio work time to finish all work refinement and sign all pieces. All pieces remaining on the student’s shelf will be fired!

  • NOTE: There will be no glaze day associated with this mini class. All color will be applied through slip and pieces will be given a clear coat of glaze. Students can also choose to have One glaze combo choice that will be applied on their behalf, or request the bisqueware back to glaze on their own time.
  • Students will be allowed a maximum of five pieces with the class. Additional forms beyond the five will be $5 each to keep and fire.
  • Starting with the second class, students can arrive 30 minutes early to warm up prior to the start of the class.  Class fee covers all tools and clay during class and 30 minutes practice time before class.

You will be working with "real" stoneware clays and glazes.  It is the same materials we use in the production of our high-fired stoneware.  Everything you make will be food, microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe.

Adult pottery classes range in size from 4 -10 people.  Class may be canceled last minute due to low enrollment.  Payment is required at the time of sign-up to secure a spot in the class.
